Rhythm
The beat or flow of a poem.
Mood
How the reader feels about a peice of writing.
Tone
The attitude the writer has bout the subject of a peice of writing.
Repetition
Certain words, phrases, lines, and stanza that are repeated.
Hyperbole
Used to draw emphasis through extreme exaggeration.
Balled
A poem that tells a story.
Alliteration
Repetition of consonant sounds in words that are close together. (Susi by the sea)
Onomatopoeia
The use of a word whose sound imitates or suggests its meaning ( BOOM BANG)
Simile
A comparison that describes something else by using the words like or as. (The boy jumps like a kangaroo)
Metaphor
A direct comparison by saying one object “is” the other. (The boy is a kangaroo)
Personification
Gives non-human things human qualities.
Extended metaphor (conceit)
When the entire poem is a metaphor.
Idiom
A phrase that actually means something different than its literal meaning. (I talked my head off).
Allusion
Reference to someone or something commonly known from literature, history, or culture. ( My dog is like DR Jekyll and Mr. Hyde)
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds in words that are close together in a sentence or verse.
Consonance
Repetition of consonant sounds in the beginning, middle or end of words. (He struck a streak of bad luck)
Iambic Pentameter
A line of poetry composed of 10 syllables arranged in 5 metrical feet (iambs) each of which consists of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable.
Sonnet
A 14 line poem written in iambic pentameter.
Couplet
2 lines of poetry that share end lines.
