Night of long knives

The Night of the Long Knives (June 30 – July 2, 1934), also known as Operation Hummingbird or the Röhm Purge, was a violent purge in Nazi Germany where Hitler ordered the extrajudicial execution of his own political enemies. Primarily targeting SA leader Ernst Röhm and his paramilitary SA ("Brownshirts"), it consolidated Hitler's power by eliminating potential rivals, reducing the SA's influence, and winning the support of the German army.

What were Hindenburgs intentions in appointing Hitler?

Evidence shows that Hindenburg was hesitant and reluctant to appoint Hitler Chancellor. Refusing in August and November 1923 but under political pressure he agreed in January 1933 so long as Hitler was only allowed a minority of Nazi’s in his cabinet (3 of 12) therefore they would be tamed

three things you need to know about Germany

-Parliamentary Government broke down, President Hindenburg was ruling by decree, appointing and dismissing Chancellors as he wished.

2)The Nazi Party was becoming increasingly popular with voters, while not a majority they were certainly becoming more noted

3)Elite groups in society (army leadership, big business, civil service and large land owners) considered that their best interests would be with a strong authoritarian government, rather than weak coalitions. In 1930s with the Great Depression deepening they were able to influence politics more than had been possible before
