Neo-Freudians/Modern unconscious: (Jung)
Psychologists that take some of Freud’s work on the unconscious mind, yet they disown some of his theories on how sex and aggression are so important. They also recognize conscious influences instead. Neo-Freudians believe in a "subconscious," not unconscious, part of the brain that may act as an autopilot or behavioral influence.
Example: Carl Jung, (Collective unconscious: Shared reservoir of information and experiences in every human’s unconscious mind) Karen Korneye, (Rejecting Freud’s view of Women) and Anna Freud.
Repression (DFM):
When anxiety arousing memories and thoughts are unconsciously redacted.
Regression (DFM):
To revert back to an earlier stage of development due to stress.
Example: Losing maturity and acting like a kindergartner.
Reaction formation (DFM):
Your Ego will switch to the opposite extreme belief when you act immature or in a bad extreme.
Projection (DFM):
When you attribute your own failings onto other people.
Rationalization (DFM):
When you give yourself a justification for doing something bad.
Displacement (DFM):
When you have shifted your impulse to a less threatening stimulus.
Example: Athletes throw a baseball bat when mad about the umpire not because they hate the bat, but because they have to displace their anger to avoid consequences.
Sublimation (DFM):
When you turn unacceptable impulses into acceptable impulses.
Example: An extremely aggressive kid becomes a linebacker in football.
Denial (DFM):
When you refuse to believe something.
Collective unconscious: (Jung)
The deepest segment of the unconscious mind that is not learned but inherited and is present in all humans.
Unconditional positive regard: (Carl Rogers)
Our personality is determined by whether or not we were provided with unconditional positive regard (Total acceptance of someone else). Rogers believes that if we were given this total acceptance as a kid, we would develop a healthy personality and self esteem.
Self actualization/Self concept:
A perspective created in Maslow’s hierarchy that focuses on achieving and becoming the best version of ourselves. Self actualization focuses on the drive to reach one’s full potential and become the best version of themselves, while self concept is the act of finally reaching self actualization.
Big 5 theory: (Trait theory/personality inventory, Paul Costa and Robert McCrae)
5 personality traits/spectrums that were derived from factor analysis and personality inventory
Example: OCEAN:
Openness (Creativity and logical thinking)
Consciousness (Organization and responsibility)
Extroverted (Socialization and introversion)
Agreeableness (Friendliness and Argumental)
Neuroticism (Emotional stability and moodyness)
