Dred Scott v. Stanford (1857)

A ruling that African Americans, enslaved or free, were not US citizens and couldn't sue in federal court

Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)

A ruling that racial segregation laws did not violate the U.S. Constitution as long as the facilities for each race were equal in quality

Brown v. Board of education (1954)

A ruling that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. The case overturned the "separate but equal" doctrine established in the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson decision

McCulloch v. Maryland (1819)

A ruling that the Federal Government had the right and power to set up a Federal bank and that states did not have the power to tax the Federal Government.

Marbury v. Madison (1803)

Established the principle of judicial review, granting the U.S. Supreme Court the power to declare laws and executive actions unconstitutional.

Loving v. Virginia (1966)

A ruling that laws banning interracial marriage violate the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. 

Roe v. Wade (1973)

A ruling that protected women’s abortion rights

Tennessee v. Scopes (1925)

Ruling that claimed schools couldn’t teach science concepts like evolution
