substance capable of eliciting humoral or cellular immune response

antigen

stimulates antibody production and binds to produced antibody

primary immune response

IgM appears first, the IgG on first exposure to antigen

secondary immune response

re-exposure to same antigen, shorter response time, more IgG

IgG

major immunoglobulin in blood - 80% and crosses placenta

IgM

largest; effective in microbial killing - first AB to be produced after invasion

IgA

secretory; present in body fluids - found in body secretions (mucous membranes)

IgE

seen in allergy and parasites

IgD

regulates activation of B cells
