Definition of diffusion
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Examples of diffusion in the body
Oxygen diffusing into blood in lungs, carbon dioxide diffusing out.
Factors affecting rate of diffusion
Concentration gradient, temperature, surface area.
Adaptations to maximise diffusion
Large surface areas (e.g., alveoli), thin barriers (one cell thick), good blood supply.
