1. Each group will work on a country case, using the data for the last
general (parliamentary) election.
2. Using the results for that election, determine (a) which electoral system
(main elements), and (b) which of the four party systems we have seen in
class (main characteristics) the country has.
3. Imagine now the electoral system becomes that of the elections to the
European Parliament. To simplify the exercise: strict proportional system,
country as single constituency, closed party lists (no preferential vote), and
threshold 5% of the vote. Calculate the results with the country-wide voting
results in the last general election for each party.
4. Compare the results using the two electoral systems and explain:
a. If the party system changes.
b. The impact of the new results on government formation.
c. Why using the results obtained with the old electoral system with the new
