Negative views on Contraception
CATHOLIC CHURCH:
- Contraception is intrinsically evil. It denies the 'sovereign role of God' in the transmission of life - EVERY SEX ACT MUST REMAIN OPEN TO THE TRANSMISSION OF LIFE!
CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIANS
- Contraception may make sexual immorality more likely. Makes sex about pleasure rather than procreation. Could risk STls and using people for sex.
SOME MUSLIMS:
- The purpose of sex is procreation, contraception is wrong because it prevents this. It interferes with God's will / plan.
- Some methods could be considered an early abortion and therefore infanticide. 'Do not kill your children for fear of poverty; we will provide for them' (Surah 17:31)
Positive views on contraception
CHURCH OF ENGLAND:
Contraception is acceptable - 'provided it is done in the light of Christian principles' -
Lambeth Conference 1930
LIBERAL CHRISTIANS:
- Contraception is a sensible method of Family Planning.
SOME MUSLIMS:
- God wants to help people 'lighten their burdens' because 'man was created weak' (Surah 4)
- Contraception can be used within marriage to help with Family Planning / Health reasons etc
SITUATION ETHICS:
-Contraception is not intrinsically evil
- it depends on the situation, e.g.
-It is better (more loving) than risking STls / unwanted pregnancies
Christian views on the Purpose of Marriage
• TO BECOME ONE FLESH (Genesis 2:24)
• HAVE A COMMITTED & LOVING SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP
• PROCREATION / TO HAVE CHILDREN / START A FAMILY
• TO FULFIL THE SACRAMENTS
What God has joined together,
let no man
separate (Mark
10:9)
Islamic Beliefs on the Purpose of Marriage

Positive attitudes on Divorce and Remarriage
Church OF ENGLAND: There are circumstances when marriages do fail and so divorce may be granted
ISLAM: Divorce is a last resort - it should follow a 'cooling off' period ( “those who intend to divorce their wives shall wait four months (Surah 2:226)) Not encouraged but is sometimes acceptable
JESUS: According to Matthew 5:32, Jesus allows divorce in the case of sexual immorality - suggests even he thought there were times it is okay
SITUATION ETHICS - COMPASSION:
(Joseph Fletcher) Do the most
LOVING thing in every situation; in some situations, divorce may be the most loving - for example, in a deeply unhappy marriage
Negative attitudes on Divorce and Remarriage
Catholic CHURCH: Marriage means you become 'One Flesh'. It is a sacrament whereby you become one in the eyes of God - says 'What God has joined together, let no man separate' Mark 10:9
CATHOLIC CHURCH: Divorce is a 'grave offense against the natural law' - it is always wrong.
ISLAM: Divorce is seen as 'detestable' to God. Muhammad didn't divorce and Muslims should follow his example. It can damage the family / society. Nikah (marriage contract) should not be broken.
SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE VOWS: Made not just before each other but also God.
'Until death do us part' - take seriously!
View of Marriages Islam

JESUS' fair treatment of women was very progressive 1st century Greco-Roman society: 'They marvelled that he was talking to a woman' (John 4:27)
CHRISTIANS believe that men and women are spiritually equal and have the same dignity.

CHURCH OF ENGLAND has allowed women to become Priests since 1994. It is predicted there will be an equal number of male and female priests by 2025 in the Church.
Negative views on Gender discrimination
TRADITIONALISTS believe customs from the past should remain
ST PAUL teaches that wives must submit to their husbands and that women should remain silent in
Church
CATHOLIC CHURCH does not allow women to become leaders in the Church because Jesus only appointed women as Apostles.
CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIANS : believe in traditional gender roles - 'same dignity but different duties'. A woman should not take on a public leadership role but should focus on childcare / homemaking
MUSLIMS believe that men and women are spiritually equal but have different social roles - women are restricted by society
Christian quote on Adultery Mark
