What was Herzberg’s theory of motivation?

That people have two sets of needs: hygiene factors and motivators

Hygiene factors

Basic needs are known as hygiene factors (or maintenance factors) and allow people to survive day to day.

Motivators

Things that allow a person to grow psychologically are called motivators.

Hygiene factor examples

• Good working conditions

• Salary

• Fair company policies 

• Relationship with colleagues

• Relationship with supervisor

What happens if the hygiene factors are not met?

If motivators are not satisfied they can act as demotivators to the employees

Are hygiene factors or motivators more important to fulfil?

In order to properly motivate its employees to work harder, a company needs to first ensure the hygiene factors are in place, and then focus on providing access to the motivators.
