Frederick Douglass
The narrator of the story. He begins to talk about his early life. He was born into slavery in Tuckahoe, Maryland.
Harriet Bailey
Douglass’s mother. He was separated from her after birth and only saw her a few times before her death when he was young. She would walk twelve miles at night to visit him, showing her care for him.
Captain Anthony
Douglass’s first master and his father. A clerk for Colonel Lloyd and the person in charge of the plantation. He would often treat slaves very badly
Colonel Edward Lloyd
a wealthy plantation owner who employs Captain Anthony. He owns hundreds of slaves and is known for his cruel behavior towards them.

Mr. Severe is a brutal overseer who dies and the slaves consider his death a blessing because of how cruel he was.

slaves were severely punished for the smallest things like stealing fruit from Colonel Lloyd’s garden or animals from the stables.
