how to use EZ naming system
look at group with is the same on either side of the double bond
if the group is on the same side it is the Z isomer
if the group is on the opposite side it is the E isomer
advantage of EZ system over cis-trans system
if carbon atoms are attached to 4 different groups they cannot be named by the cis-trans system but can be named in EZ system
what are the CIP priority rules
used if carbon atoms are attached to 4 different groups
look at atoms attached to the carbons on either side of the double bond
the element with the greatest atomic number is given higher priority
repeat for the other side
use the two with the higher priority to assign E or Z

what to do it using CIP priority rules and one side has same initial group
move to next atom
