absolute zero
The coldest temperature that anything can possibly get and at which all energy is removed from it.
atom
The smallest particle of an element; it contains protons, neutrons, and electrons and makes up all matter.
solubility
The degree to which a substance will dissolve into another substance.
melting point
Temperature at which a solid changes into a liquid.
proton
Particle with a positive charge found inside the nucleus of an atom.
neutron
Particle with no charge found inside the nucleus of an atom.
element
Substance that is composed of just one type of atom and cannot be reduced to simpler substances by normal chemical means.
compound
Substance made up of two or more different types of atoms joined together by chemical bonds.
atomic arrangement
The way atoms are arranged.
chromatography
Process for separating mixtures of substances with different boiling points or solubility.
buoyancy
The ability of a substance to float in a liquid.
density
A ratio that describes how tightly packed the molecules in a substance are by comparing the mass to the volume.
conductivity
The degree to which a substance can conduct electricity.
ductibility
The degree to which a substance will stretch or bend without breaking.
matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
boiling point
The temperature at which a liquid changes into a gas.
condensation point
Temperature at which a gas change into a liquid.
freezing point
Temperature at which a liquid changes into a solid.
nucleus
The small dense part in the center of an atom containing protons and neutrons.
state of matter
One of the three forms that matter can take, either liquid, gas, or solid.
reactive
A substance that easily combines with other substances
property
A trait or characteristic that helps to identify a substance.
electron
Small particle with a negative charge that travels fast around an atom.
