Posterior
Toward the back of the body.
Anterior
Toward the front of the body.
Dorsal
Toward the back or posterior side (in humans, often synonymous with posterior).
Ventral
Toward the belly or front side.
Superior
Above; toward the head.
Inferior
Below; toward the feet.
Lateral
Toward the side of the body; away from the midline.
Medial
Toward the midline of the body.
Proximal
Nearer to the point of attachment or to the trunk.
Distal
Farther from the point of attachment or the trunk.
Caudad
Toward the tail; toward the inferior end of the body.
Cephalad
Toward the head; toward the superior end of the body.
Integumentary System
The body system consisting of the skin, hair, nails, and associated glands; protects the body and regulates temperature and sensation.
Structure of the Skin
The skin comprises the epidermis and dermis (and underlying subcutaneous tissue) and includes components like hair and glands; it protects, senses, and helps regulate temperature.
