Endosymbiosis

Mitochondria, chloroplasts, and maybe other eukaryotic organelles were formerly free living bacteria (prokaryotes)

  • These prokaryotes were taken inside another cell as an endosymbiont

    • Organism that lives within body or cells of another organism

New cards

Endosymbiosis process

  1. Early prokaryote increased in size & SA:V decreased

  2. Outer membrane folded inwards to become ER & nuclear membrane

  3. Respiring prokaryote was endosymbiosed to become mitochondria

  4. (Step 3.) w, cynobacteria to become chloroplasts

New cards

Evidence for endosymbiosis

  1. Mitochondria are similar size to prokaryote

  2. Mitochondria have similar DNA to prokaryote

  3. Mitochondria can replicate themselves
