Comparison of prokaryotic & eukaryotic cells

Endosymbiosis
Mitochondria, chloroplasts, and maybe other eukaryotic organelles were formerly free living bacteria (prokaryotes)
These prokaryotes were taken inside another cell as an endosymbiont
Organism that lives within body or cells of another organism
Endosymbiosis process
Early prokaryote increased in size & SA:V decreased
Outer membrane folded inwards to become ER & nuclear membrane
Respiring prokaryote was endosymbiosed to become mitochondria
(Step 3.) w, cynobacteria to become chloroplasts
Evidence for endosymbiosis
Mitochondria are similar size to prokaryote
Mitochondria have similar DNA to prokaryote
Mitochondria can replicate themselves
