Egalitarian Society
A society where social systems lack clearly defined status differences, and individuals have equal access to resources.
Non-Egalitarian Society
A society with clearly defined status differences and permanent leadership positions, resulting in unequal access to resources.
Achieved Status
Status that is earned over an individual's life and not awarded at birth.
Ascribed Status
Status that is given at birth, often inherited.
Social Stratification
A system of ranking categories of people in a hierarchy according to status, wealth, and/or power.
Implicit Bias
Unconscious attitudes or stereotypes that affect understanding, actions, and decisions.
Explicit Bias
Conscious and acknowledged prejudice that affects behavior towards a group.
Cultural Colonialism
The internal domination by one group over the cultural practices and ideology of others.
Forced Assimilation
Social and cultural actions that compel various cultural groups to conform to a dominant culture.
Ethnocide
The suppression or destruction of a culture or certain ethnic groups.
Genocide
The deliberate elimination of a group through mass murder.
Public Transcript
Visible resistance to authority that is accepted in a society.
Hidden Transcript
Unseen actions or resistance against authority not immediately perceived in social interactions.
Multiculturalism
The promotion of cultural value for diversity and the maintenance of different cultural identities.
Reconciliation
The process of repairing relationships between groups after violent conflict.
