Construction of Knowledge
- Refers to how knowledge is created, shaped, and understood
-Evolves social, cultural, historical context that influences how individuals & societies produce and validate knowledge
Examples:
"Pedagogy of The Oppressed" investigates different ways knowledge is learned/taught
"Fact making and feminism" examines social construction of scientific knowledge
Diaspora
A dispersion of people from their homeland while often maintaining ties and influencing the country where they are located/Movement, migration, or scattering or people away from an established or ancestral homeland
Examples:
"Unfinished Migrations" explores what defines the African diaspora(fluid, complex, a framework)
"Antiquity" describes the origin of diaspora and its importance in understanding blackness now
"Transatlantic Movement" the creation of a dynamic diaspora during the slave trade
Identity
Characteristics, values, and beliefs that define an individual or group influenced by factors like race, gender, class, and nationality can evolve over time
Examples:
"Complexity of Identity" talks about the different factors affecting identity formation
"Gender as an Analytic Category" gender is a construct, assignment of roles to the sexes, and women experience gender differently
Race
-A social construct used to determine humans based on physical characteristics such as skin color and hair textures.
Examples:
"Racial Formations" addresses how race changes as a social construct
Gender
-Refers to the roles, behaviors, and attributes that society considers appropriate for women's, men's, non-binary individuals
Examples:
"Black Women in the Community of Slaves" provides a description of women in the enslaved community apart from traditional narratives
"Shifting Contexts" emphasizes importance of using gender as a lens for inclusive study
Sexuality
Describes a persons sexual orientation, behavior, and capacity for erotic experiences
Heteronormativity
The assumption that heterosexuality is the default/norm sexual orientation that gender is binary.
Example:
"Heterosexual Checklist" exemplifies privileges that lgbt people may not experience
Trans Identity
-refers to individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned
Class
-system of social stratification based on income, wealth, education, occupation
-it could effect access to resources, opportunities, and social status
Critical Consciousness
-A concept developed my Paulo Freire referring to the ability to perceive social, political, economic, oppression and take action against it
Examples:
"Pedagogy of the Oppressed" a full understanding of concepts in the world is the path to true liberation
"unfinished migrations" using the african diaspora as a framework for understanding global history and social change
Resistance
-The act of signing back against forms of oppression
Example:
"Asserting the Right to Be" argues and demonstrates the ways that enslaved Africans resisted dehumanization
Resilience
-capacity to recover or adapt to difficult oppression
Example:
"Enslavement" explores how even with rights and identities stripped, Enslaved Africans exhibited resilience by maintaining cultural practices and resistance
Intersectionality
-Based on Black Feminist works, a term coined by kimberle crenshaw that explains how oppression (racism, sexism, classism) overlaps and shapes people's experience
Examples:
"Shifting Contexts" emphasizes importance of intersectionality in analyzing race gender class and culture
"Gender as an Analytic Category" Intersectionality of race and gender(among others) affects the way women experience gender
Intellectual Dishonesty
deliberate misuse of information to push an agenda/gain power
Colonization
Taking control over an area and subjugating the populations
