Collective term used to describe all main forms of communication (information, news, entertainment) In society
Traditional media pros and cons
pros: wide range, easy to control
Cons: impersonal, government can control it
New media pros and cons:
pros: targeted, accessible, wide range
Cons: tougher to control, misinformation
Mass media
Agencies that transmit communications to large audiences e.g. Tv, newspaper
Role of the media:
To inform, educate, connect and entertain society
To distribute information on local, national and international politics
To promote political and social change

Noam Chomsky’s main idea. Consists of five modes of media propaganda: media ownership, advertising, media elite, flak and common enemy

If media is owned by a corporation it is unlikely to publish any negatives about that corporation since their goal is to make a profit
