Sentence patterns

A simple sentence consists of a single independent clause which may be one of 7 types. The types differ according to whether one or more clause elements are obligatorily present in addition to the subject and the verb. The verb element in a simple sentence is always a finite verb phrase.

  • Subject + verb → Garfield laughed.

  • Subject + verb + object → Everybody knows Garfield.

  • Subject + verb + complement → Garfield looks hungry.

  • Subject + verb + adverbial → The show is at 5.

  • Subject + verb + indirect object + direct object → Jon gave G. all the pizzas.

  • Subject + verb + object + complement → Garfield called Odie a stupid dog.

  • Subject + verb + object + adverbial → Garfield put the pizza on the table.
