Vector
A quantity that has both magnitude and direction
Examples of vector quantities?
Force, velocity, displacement, acceleration, momentum
Scalar
A physical quantity that has magnitude only, NO DIRECTION
Examples of scalar quantities
Speed, distance, mass, temperature, time
How are vectors represented?
With arrows - the length shows the magnitude and the direction of the arrow shows the direction of the vector.
Contact force
A push or pull on one object by another that is touching it
Examples of contact forces
Friction, air resistance, tension in ropes, normal contact forces
Non - contact force
A force that one object can apply to another object without touching it
Examples of non - contact forces
Magnetic, gravitational, electrostatic
Interaction pair
A pair of forces that are equal in strength, but opposite in direction
