What is malaria caused by?
A protist
What is the vector for malaria?
Mosquitoes
Explain the process of a mosquito giving a person malaria.
A person with malaria carries the malaria protist in their blood.
A mosquito bites the infected person and picks up the malaria protist
The mosquito is now a vector - not having the disease, but is carrying the protist
The mosquito bites a second person without malaria
The protist is transferred from the mosquito to the blood of the second person. They now have malaria.
Explain why in countries with endemic malaria it is encourages to avoid having stagnant water around their houses (2 marks)
The stagnant water allows for mosquitoes to live and breed, and malaria are the only vector for malaria. Having no stagnant water around the houses prevent attracting mosquitoes and lowers the risk of the spread of malaria
