What is an appliance firewall?

A stand-alone hardware firewall that performs only the function of a firewall and is implemented on the appliance firmware. It monitors all traffic passing into and out of a network segment and can be implemented with routed interfaces or as a layer 2/virtual wire 'transparent' firewall.
