Organic Compounds
contain carbon and hydrogen
Carbon
is the most important element for life. This is because it has 4 valence electrons, so it forms 4 covalent bonds. It can form very long chains of binds. It mostly bonds with hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.
Hydrocarbon
long sections of molecules made from hydrogen and carbon. They have similar electronegativities. They are no polar, so they are hydrophobic.
Hydrophobic
they are repelled by water.
Functional Groups
chemical groups attached to the carbon skeleton in chemical reactions.
Hydrophilic
attracted to water.
Aldehyde
The end of a molecule.
Ketone
Middle of the molecule.
