CAUCUSES

A closed meeting of a political or legislative group to choose candidates for office or to decide issues of policy

COMMITTEE SYSTEM

Plays a major role in the passage of legislation; bills may die if committees fail to act upon them or reject them.

FILIBUSTER

Used by the minority party to stall or delay action on a bill

CLOTURE

Method by which Senate limits filibuster, and involves a petition to end debate and requires vote of at least 60 senators.

PORK BARREL

Attempt to provide funds and projects for a member's home district or state.

LOGROLLING

"I'll support your bill if you support my bill."

RIDERS

Additions to legislation which generally have no connection to the legislation.

CHRISTMAS TREE BILL

When a bill has lots of riders.
