What is the definition of Leadership?
an influence process where a person moves a group toward a common goal and implies a higherarchy even if the higherarchy is very informal
What are the lenses of leadership?
a trait— who you are at your core, you’re born with it
an ability— you have the ability to do something
a skill— something someone can do and that can be developed
a behavior— an observable action, something you do, can be viewed
a relationship

What are elements of toxic leadership?
uses their power to achieve personal goals

What are the traits of an effective leader?
intelligence — measured by IQ
confidence — as you do things you gain confidence, if you project confidence early on people will follow
charisma — draws people in
determination— making up your mind to see something through
socioability— being able to “work a room” has social skills
integrity — dependable, good moral values, can be trusted
What are the differences between the types of strength-based leadership approaches?
Authoritarian— usually viewed as an asshole, believe in theory X
Democratic/participative— if they don’t know what to do they don’t want to be associated with something that fails, it can protract the amount of time it takes to get things done
What is McGregors theory?
Theory X — people dislike people and because of this they need direction and control, they often avoid responsibility
Theory Y — people like work, they’re self motivated, they seek responsibility and have ambition
What is the difference between task and relationship style orientation?
Task oriented— they find meaning and value in getting things done, goal oriented, wants to accomplish goals, likes to-do lists
Relationship oriented— finds meaning in just being, social, like being around people, want a connection,
What are the four social styles?
Driving style— independant, formal, practical, works quickly and alone
Expressive— forceful, animated, adventurous, impulsive
Amiable— supportive, dependable, open, pliable
analytical— needs to be right, thinks, detail focused, fact and research
What are the two dimensions of social style?
Assertiveness— exroverted vs introverted, more asking vs more telling, pace and quantity and volume of speech, body posture, eye contact
Responsiveness— more vs less inflection, focus on subject of speech, facts/ data vs stories/ opinions, use of hands, body posture, facial expressions
What are the categories of leadership skills?
administrative skills— managing people and resources, do you have the technical skills to do the job
interpersonal skills— ability to read others, emotional intelluigence, managing conflict
Conceptual skills— creating a vision, strategic planning, problem solving
