What is congestive heart failure (CHF)?
A condition where the heart has an impaired ability to pump blood effectively
What is a key characteristic symptom of congestive heart failure?
Edema (swelling)
What causes edema in congestive heart failure?
Increased blood backup leading to fluid leaking into interstitial spaces
What is systemic edema?
Accumulation of fluid in body tissues due to blood backing up in systemic circulation
Which ventricle impairment leads to systemic edema?
Right ventricle
Why does right ventricular failure cause systemic edema?
The right ventricle cannot pump blood to the lungs, causing blood to back up in systemic circulation
What happens to blood flow when the right ventricle is impaired?
Blood remains in systemic circulation instead of moving forward to the lungs
How does blood backup lead to edema?
Increased pressure in vessels pushes fluid into interstitial spaces
What are common signs of systemic edema?
Swelling in legs, ankles, and peripheral tissues
What is pulmonary edema?
Accumulation of fluid in the lungs due to blood backing up in pulmonary circulation
Which ventricle impairment leads to pulmonary edema?
Left ventricle
Why does left ventricular failure cause pulmonary edema?
The left ventricle cannot pump blood to the body, causing blood to back up into the lungs
What happens to blood flow when the left ventricle is impaired?
Blood remains in pulmonary circulation instead of moving forward to the body
How does pulmonary edema affect breathing?
Fluid in the lungs interferes with gas exchange, causing shortness of breath
What are key symptoms of pulmonary edema?
Breathing difficulty, impaired gas exchange, possible crackles
What type of circulation is affected in systemic edema?
Systemic circulation (body)
What type of circulation is affected in pulmonary edema?
Pulmonary circulation (lungs)
What is the underlying problem in both systemic and pulmonary edema?
Blood is not moving forward effectively and backs up
How does CHF affect oxygen delivery to tissues?
It reduces perfusion, leading to decreased oxygen and nutrient delivery
Why is CHF dangerous if untreated?
It can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and impaired gas exchange
What is the key difference between right and left heart failure?
Right causes systemic edema, left causes pulmonary edema
What is a simple way to remember right vs left heart failure?
Right = rest of body swelling, Left = lungs fluid
