What is matter?
Anything that has a mass and volume
What is a pure substance and what are the two types?
Pure substance is something made of only one kind of particle. A pure substance can either be elements or compounds.
What is an element made of?
An element is pure substance made up of only one type of atom
What gives an element its unique identity?
It’s number of protons
What types of elements are there?
Metals metalloids, and nonmetals
Where can elements be found?
On the periodic table
What are metalloids?
Elements that both have metal and nonmetal properties
What is a compound?
A substance made of more than one element chemically combined
What are the two types of compounds?
Ionic compounds and molecular covalent compounds
What is an ionic compound?
An ionic compound is a type of chemical made when a metal and a non-metal join together.
Give an example of an ionic compound
Table salt (NaCl)
What is a molecular covalent compound?
A molecular covalent compound is made when two or more non-metals share electrons to stick together.
Give an example of a molecular covalent compound
Diamonds and water
What kind of properties do pure substances have?
Intrinsic and extrinsic properties
What are intrinsic properties?
Properties that do not depend on how much of the substance is you have
What are some examples of intrinsic properties?
Boiling point melting point and freezing point
What are extrinsic properties?
Properties that depend on the amount of substance present
What are some examples of extrinsic properties?
Mass volume and length
What is a mixture?
Something made up of more than one type of substance
What are two types of mixtures?
Solutions and mechanical mixtures
What is a solution?
Homogeneous mixture where any substances are evenly mixed and hard to separate
Give examples of solutions
Apple juice, water with food colouring
In a solution, what is the solute?
(The substance disolved in solution) present in the smaller amount
In a solution, what is the solvent?
(The substance doing the dissolving) presence in the greater amount-usually water
What is a mechanical mixture?
The heterogeneous mixture where you could see the difference substances with your eyes
Give me example examples of a mechanical mixtures
Gravel, chocolate chip cookie
