Hybridization
The concept used to describe the mixing of atomic orbitals to form new hybrid orbitals, suitable for pairing electrons to form chemical bonds.
Molecular Geometry
The three-dimensional arrangement of the atoms in a molecule.
Ligands
Ions or molecules that can donate a pair of electrons to a central metal atom to form a complex.
Complex Ion
A charged species consisting of a central metal atom bonded to one or more ligands.
Boiling Point
The temperature at which a liquid's vapor pressure equals the external pressure surrounding the liquid.
Ionization Energy
The energy required to remove an electron from an atom or ion in its gaseous state.
Alkali Metals
The elements found in Group 1 of the periodic table, known for their high reactivity, especially with water.
Acidic Oxides
Oxides that react with water to form acids.
Lewis Structure
A diagram that shows the bonding between atoms of a molecule and the lone pairs of electrons that may exist.
First Ionization Energy
The energy required to remove the outermost electron from a neutral atom in its gaseous state.
