Cystic Fibrosis (CF)
An inherited genetic disorder affecting exocrine glands, leading to mucus accumulation in the lungs and digestive issues.
Exocrine Glands
Glands that secrete substances through ducts to the surface of an organ or tissue.
Symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis
Thick mucus accumulation, recurrent infections, failure to thrive, malnutrition, and vitamin deficiencies.
Chloride Sweat Test
A diagnostic test for cystic fibrosis, where sweat chloride levels over 60 mEq/L confirm the diagnosis.
Pulmonary Function Tests
Tests measuring lung function, often showing decreased flow rates in cystic fibrosis patients.
Rescue Medications for Asthma
Medications such as short-acting beta-2 agonists (e.g., Albuterol) used for immediate relief of asthma symptoms.
Long-Acting Beta Agonists (LABA)
Medications that help open the airways for an extended period and are used in asthma management.
Status Asthmaticus
A severe asthma attack that does not respond to typical medications and requires emergency treatment.
Bronchiolitis
An acute infection of the lower respiratory tract, commonly caused by RSV, leading to inflammation and obstruction.
Epiglottitis
A life-threatening condition caused by inflammation of the epiglottis, typically due to bacterial infection.
Bacterial Pneumonia
A serious lung infection caused by bacteria, with symptoms similar to viral pneumonia but higher mortality rates.
Pediatric Pneumonia
Lung infection that can be viral or bacterial, frequent cause of morbidity in children younger than 2 years.
Tachypnea
An abnormally rapid breathing rate, often observed in respiratory distress conditions.
Auscultation
Listening to the internal sounds of the body, often using a stethoscope, to assess health issues.
Croup (Laryngotracheobronchitis)
A viral infection causing swelling around the vocal cords and leading to a characteristic barking cough.
Heart Murmur
An unusual sound during heartbeats often indicating turbulent blood flow due to structural heart defects.
Tetralogy of Fallot
A congenital heart defect comprising four abnormalities that result in insufficient oxygenation of blood.
Prostaglandins
A group of medications used to maintain ductus arteriosus patency in certain congenital heart defects.
Peak Flow Monitoring
A tool used by asthma patients to assess lung function and adjust treatment accordingly.
