Ritual
A form of symbolic action that is patterned, repetitive, and recognized as significant, often aiming to gain the influence of a cosmic being.
Rites of Passage
Rituals that mark the transition from one life stage to another and include three stages: Separation, Transition (liminality), and Integration.
Communitas
A sense of community that results from experiencing liminality together, creating a temporary unstructured state.
Etic Perspective
Analysis of culture from an outsider’s perspective using comparative categories and interpretations.
Emic Perspective
Analysis of culture from an insider’s perspective, focusing on the meanings and experiences of those within the culture.
Bilateral Kinship
A kinship classification system where lineage is traced through both maternal and paternal lines.
Patrilineal Descent
A system where lineage and inheritance are traced through the male line.
Matrilineal Descent
A system where lineage and inheritance are traced through the female line.
Cross-Cousins
Children of opposite-sex siblings of Ego’s parents.
Parallel Cousins
Children of the same-sex siblings of Ego’s parents.
Fictive Kinship
Relationships that are not based on blood or marriage but create social ties akin to kinship, such as 'milk kin'.
Endogamy
Marriage within one’s own social group or community.
Exogamy
Marriage outside of one’s own social group or community.
Consanguinal Kin
Individuals related by blood.
Affinal Kin
Individuals related by marriage.
Brideprice
Wealth or payment given from the groom’s family to the bride’s family as part of marriage.
