Salivary glands
Exocrine glands that produce + empty saliva into the oral cavity via ducts
Aid digestion
Protect teeth from bacteria
Moisten food for swallowing
Where can salivary glands be found ?
In mucosa - moist inner lining of organs/body cavities
Oral cavity, palate, paranasal sinuses, pharynx, trachea, bronchi
How many salivary glands in the mouth and throat ?
750
Types of salivary glands
Mucous and serous
3 large paired salivary glands
Parotid
Submandibular
Sublingual
Parotid glands location
In front of the ear - Wedged between ramus of mandible and sternocleidomastoid muscle
Extended inferiorly from EAM to angle of mandible
Parotid glands appearance
Largest salivary gland
Contains fatty tissue and intraglandular lymph nodes - looks different than other salivary glands
Parotid duct
Stensen duct
Emerges from anterior edge of duct to oral cavity opposite the 2nd upper molar tooth
Passes under zygomatic arch
Parotid gland in axial view
Around where the ears are
Parotid gland in coronal view
Large circles on either side of neck, at ear height
How is the transducer positioned when scanning parotid glands?
Parallel to the ear, in front
Submandibular glands location
Border the posterior half of mandible
Extends from angle of mandible to level of the hyoid bone
Submandibular duct
Wharton duct
Opens into oral cavity on either side of lingual frenulum, posterior to teeth
Lingual frenulum
Small fold of mucous membrane at the midline, extending from the floor of the mouth to the under surface (bottom) of the tongue
Where is the transducer placed for submandibular scan?
Underneath the jaw line
How is visibility of salivary ducts improved?
Prior to scans patients consume something sour to increase production of saliva
Increased production = ducts dilate, easier to see
Coronal view of submandibular glands
Located on either side of tongue
Location of sublingual glands
Lie under the tongue on the floor of the mouth
Smallest salivary gland
Rivinus ducts
10-20 sublingual ducts open in a line along floor of the mouth
Bartholin duct
Fusion of rivinus ducts
Opens into or adjacent to submandibular duct
Where is the transducer placed to image sublingual glands?
Directly underneath the chin
Where are all salivary glands concentrated?
Floor of mouth and along jaw
Coronal view of sublingual glands from underneath chin
Glands are focused in a semi circle along bottom teeth
