Define substitution reactions
Involves replacing an atom (or a group of atoms) by another atom; involves the breaking & forming of single bonds
What are the 3 types of substitution reactions there are?
Nucleophilic substitution
Electrophilic substitution
Free radical substitution
How does an addition reaction work?
Involves two molecules combining to form a single new product; this involves having multiple bonds
What are the types of addition reactions are there?
Electrophilic addition
Nucleophilic addition
How do elimination reactions work?
Involves thee removal of an atom or group of atoms from two adjacent atoms to form multiple bonds (formation of C=C bonds))
How does a condensation reaction work?
When two molecules combine to form a new molecule and a smaller molecule (H2O)
Ethan oil acid and ethanol undergo condensation to give ethyl Ethanoate (ester) and water
How does hydrolysis of a compound work?
involves breaking of covalent bonds by reaction with water
Ethyl ethanoate (ester) is hydrolysedto give ethanoic acid and ethanol
What is oxidation?
The gain of oxygen or loss of hydrogen atoms
What is reduction?
The loss of oxygen or gain of hydrogen atoms
What is the opposite reaction of the addition reaction?
Elimination reaction
What is the opposite reaction of Condensation reaction?
Hydrolysis reaction
