“mandatory” amendments and commonly forgotten ones

first amendment

The right to freedom of speech, freedom of religion (free excessive and establishment), freedom of press, freedom of assembly and freedom of petition

second amendment

right to keep and bear arms

third amendment

right to keep soldiers from quartering(living) in one’s home during times of peace or war

(she’s perfect)

fourth amendment

right to protection from unreasonable searches and seizures (esp without specific warrants)

fifth amendment

the right to grand jury, no double jeopardy, protections against self-incrimination, life liberty and property (due process) and just compensation

sixth amendment

right to counsel, right to a speedy fair and public trial by an impartial (non-biased) jury in the state in which the crime was committed, as well as being in formed of the crime in which you are accused of and obtaining witnesses for their defense

seventh amendment

right to, in civil cases, be tried by a jury (of your peers)

eighth amendment

right to protections against cruel and unusual punishment and protection against excessive bail/fines

ninth amendment

right to protection against government infringement on one’s rights (right to privacy)

tenth amendment

all rights not reserved to the federal government by the constitution or prohibited by the states, are given to the people

thirteenth amendment

the abolition of slavery and involuntary servitude

fourteenth amendment

due process, equal protections act, selective incorporation of bill of rights (amendments 1-10) to the states not just fed govt

fifteenth amendment

suffrage for all men (emphasis on voting rights for black men)

sixteenth amendment

the implementation of income tax, gives congress power to lay and collect income taxes without apportionment (sharing between several ppl or parties)

eighteenth amendment

prohibition of alcohol during great depression era

(only amendment to be overturned (more specifically, by another amendment))

nineteenth amendment

women’s suffrage, voting rights for all people

twenty-first amendment

the repeal of the eighteenth amendment (prohibition of alcohol) - alcohol is legal again

twenty-second amendment

presidential tenure (term limits for presidency)

twenty-fourth amendment

abolition of the poll tax in federal elections

twenty-sixth amendment

the reduction of the voting age from 21 to 18 years old
