Elements of Art
The TOOLS an artist uses to build a work of art Line, Shape, Color, Form, Value range, Texture, Space
Line
A point pulled through space
Contour Line
Pressure change to show thick and thin line
Continuous Line
the line (pencil) never leaves the paper, but continues
Blind Contour
not looking at the paper when drawing, not picking up pencil either
Projects with Line
Expressive Portrait with Color Splash
Shape
is 2d, has length and width
Organic shape
based on nature (leaf shapes, etc)
Geometric Shape
Based on math (circles, triangles, shapes)
Proportions
size relationship of shapes and forms to each other
Scale
Large, medium and small differences, changes in shape
Form
has length, width, and depth, is 3 dimensional (ie, cube)
Projects with Shape and Form
Black & White Acrylic Eye, Deep Space Infinity, Brown Bag
Value Range
the range from light to dark
Mark Making techniques to show value range on a form
Hatching , Scumbling, Stippling, Shading (see sketchbook)
Projects with Value Range
Black and White Eye Painting, Deep Space Infinity Perspective Drawing,
Color
Hue, the light reflected off an object, without light there would be no color
Saturation
the intensity or brightness of a color
Primary
first colors, pure colors, from these all other colors can be created Red, yellow, blue
Secondary colors
orange, green, violet
Warm & Cool
warm like the sun: red, oranges, yellows, cool like water: blues, greens, etc
Complimentary
colors opposite on the color wheel Red + Green , Purple + Yellow, Blue + Orange
Neutrals
black, white and grey (they aren’t real colors)
Tints, Tones, Shades
creating the lightness or darkness of a color with paint Tint
Shade
Black + color
Tone
grey + color
Projects with Color Emphasis
Skeletal Studies, Impasto Landscapes
Texture
the surface quality of an object
Real texture
you can actually feel it
Implied Texture
a photo or drawing of something with texture
Impasto
painting technique with real texture
Intaglio
engraving and scratching into a plate which will be printed with ink and run through a press
Projects with Emphasis on Texture
Impasto Landscapes (thick paint), Intaglio Printmaking (incised/engraved plate), Brown Bag (crumpled)
Space Positive/Negative
The actual positive object you are drawing and the negative empty space around it Provides: Space Perspective & Depth in a drawing or painting
Foreground
area closest to viewer
middle ground
centered
background
area furthest from viewer
Vanishing Point
A point where all orthogonal lines recede in a linear perspective drawing
Projects with Emphasis on Positive and Negative Space (OBJECT AND EMPTY BACKGROUND)
Brown Bag Drawing
Projects with Emphasis on Space/Perspective/Depth-
Deep Space Infinity, Impasto Landscapes
Media & Materials
Items that assist with mark-making
Graphite
Dry Media,Identified by numbers and letters, must use pressure change
H-Light pencils, hard
B-Dark pencils, soft
Numbers next to letters
indicate how extreme the letter is (how hard or soft)
Charcoal
Dry media: Identified by numbers and letters, must use pressure change Blending Stump
Tortillion
for smoothing and smudging values
Marker
Wet media, permanent, must vary direction of mark and overlap to create value range
Watercolor Pencils
Can be used wet or dry
Watercolor Paints
Wet media, transparent, show dilution
Acrylic paints
wet media, opaque
Heavy-Bodied Acrylic
acrylic that is think and in tubs
Gel Medium
substance to mix with acrylic to make it even thicker
Palette
dish with wells for mixing paint
Palette Knife
tool for impasto spread
Ruler
assists in straight edges for linear perspective
Stylus
engraving/incising into a plate
Printing press
Machine to press a plate to a paper to transfer ink
Heat Press
Machine to press a wrinkled paper to be flat
Draw From Observation
things you see in front of you and record on paper
Draw From Imagination
things you create in your head
Draw From Memory
things you remember from your past
