Cell
The smallest building block of all living organisms, composed of cytoplasm and membrane.
Cytoplasm
The liquid medium inside a cell's membrane, mostly consisting of water.
Nucleus
The control center of the cell that regulates all functions including reproduction.
Erythrocyte
Red blood cell responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body.
Leukocyte
White blood cell that helps protect the body from infection.
Thrombocyte
Platelet that aids in the stoppage of bleeding, especially in smaller blood vessels.
Hemoglobin
A red protein pigment in red blood cells that binds to oxygen.
Phagocytosis
The process by which white blood cells engulf and digest bacteria.
Serum
The liquid portion of blood that remains after clotting; does not contain cells.
Fibrinogen
A water-soluble protein that converts into fibrin during the clotting process.
CBC
Complete Blood Count; a common blood test that measures red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
Hematology
The study of blood, its components, and disorders.
