What is a chemical reaction?
Where one compound is changed into another by breaking down and forming bonds
What is a reactant?
A substance that goes into a chemical reaction
What is a product?
A substance that is formed in a chemical reaction
What does energy do in a chemical reaction?
It can be released (which occurs spontaneously) or it can be absorbed (which needs a source of energy)
Energy can be in the form of heat. What is exothermic and what is endothermic?
Exothermic - Reaction that releases (exits) energy in the form of heat
Endothermic - Reaction that absorbs (entering) energy in the form of heat
What is activation energy?
It’s energy needed to get a reaction started
In an endothermic reaction which is less: The energy of the reactant or the product?
The energy of the reactant is less than the energy of that product
In an exothermic reaction which is less: The energy of the reactant or the product?
The energy of the reactant is greater than the energy of that product
What is an enzyme?
A biological catalyst which is usually a protein. It also lowers activation energy and has the activation sight.
What is a catalyst?
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction. Catalysts are necessary for life.
What is a substrate?
A reactant for an enzyme
What is a enzyme-substrate complex?
When the enzyme and catalyst meet together at the activation sight this is what they form
What is denature?
When an enzyme changes shape
Can enzymes be reused?
Yes, unless something like temperature or pH change it shape
