Bronsted Lowry Acid
A substance that donates a proton (H+) in a chemical reaction.
Bronsted Lowry Base
A substance that accepts a proton (H+) in a chemical reaction.
Acid-Base Reaction Product
The products of an acid-base reaction are typically a salt and water.
Reaction of Acid and Base Example
Hydrochloric acid reacts with magnesium hydroxide to form magnesium chloride and water.
Reaction of Acids and Carbonates
Reactions between acids and carbonates produce salt, carbon dioxide, and water.
Carbon Dioxide Indicators
Fizzing or bubbling during a reaction indicates the production of carbon dioxide.
Example of Acid-Carbonate Reaction
Hydrochloric acid reacting with zinc carbonate produces zinc chloride, water, and carbon dioxide.
Acid and Metal Reaction
When an acid reacts with a metal, the products are salt and hydrogen gas.
Activity Series of Metals
A ranking of metals based on their reactivity, where more reactive metals can displace less reactive ones.
Basic Oxides Reaction with Water
Metal oxides react with water to form basic hydroxides.
Acidic Oxides Reaction with Water
Nonmetal oxides react with water to form acids.
Amphoteric Oxides
Oxides that can react with both acids and bases, usually forming salt and water.
Summary of Acid Reactions
An acid with a base forms salt and water; an acid with a carbonate forms salt, carbon dioxide, and water.
