radiation fog
ground cools air to dew point on calm, clear nights
advection fog
warm, moist air moves over cold surface, winds are required for this fog to form and it forms primarily over coastal regions
warm air over water → cool land (cools to dewpoint)
upslope fog
Fog formed as moist, stable air flows upward over a topographic barrier such as a mountain
warm air at base of mountain → gets blown upwards and cools at the top.
steam fog
Cold, dry air moves over warm water. Common over bodies of water during the coldest times of the year
warm air over land → blows over cold water and cools. (looks like steam)
Ice fog
Occurs in cold weather when temperature is below freezing and water vapor freezes
