What is collision theory?

Collision theory states, that for a reaction to occur, the reactant particles must collide with sufficient energy and correct orientation. Known as a successful collision.

6
New cards

What does the increase of reactants do?

Increases the rate of reaction as it increases the number of particles available to react. (increase frequency)

7
New cards

What does the increase in temperature do?

With reference to collision theory...Increases the kinetic energy of particles ie. the speed, which increases the frequency of collisions and a greater proportion of particles will have the energy to meet the activation energy requirement, increasing the reaction rate.

8
New cards

What does the increase in surface area do?

Increases the rate of reaction as it increases the number of particles available to react. (increase frequency)

9
New cards

What does the increase of pressure do?

Involves gas particles being forced closer together. This will increase the frequency of collisions as it is more likely for particles to collide, with higher pressure.

10
New cards

What does a catalyst mean?

An alternative route for the reaction, with a lower activation energy. Particles need less energy to collide successfully. This increases the amount of successful collisions.
