Electoral College
A transitional body that formally elects the president and vice president of the United States.
Winner-takes-all
An electoral system where the candidate receiving the most votes in a state secures all of that state's Electoral College votes.
Battleground states
States where both major political parties have similar levels of support and which can swing from one election to another.
District system
A method of distributing electoral votes by assigning one electoral vote to the winner of each congressional district and two to the statewide winner.
Misfire election
An election where a candidate wins the Electoral College but loses the popular vote.
Gerrymandering
The practice of redrawing district lines to benefit a particular political group.
Electoral vote
The official vote cast by an elector in the Electoral College.
Popular vote
The total number of votes cast for a candidate by the public.
Certification of votes
The official process by which election results are confirmed and reported.
Congressional Certification
The process in which Congress counts electoral votes and declares the winner of the presidential election.
