What are ions?

Are atoms that have gained or lost electrons, and as a result have charge either positve or negative.

2
New cards

What is cations?

Atoms that ahve lost one or more electrons result in a positive charge.(It like giving away negative things in your life cause you to become more positive)

3
New cards

What is anions?

Are atoms that gained one or more electrons result in a negative charge. (It like bring in negative in your life cause you to become more negative)

4
New cards

What are ionic bonds?

A chemical bond where an atom loses electron(s) to another atom. This bond forms between a metal and a nonmetal. Metal will give up electron and nonmetal accept them. (salt will always form from ionic bonds (metal + nonmetal))

5
New cards

Describe how to naming ionic compounds.

Cation alway goes first. Then if anion is a monoatomic(single atom) add -ide at the end of the atom. If anion is polyatomic(one or more atom) then add -ate at the end.

New cards

What is covalent bonds?

Is a chemical bond where atom share electrons between atoms. Bonds are usually formed between two nonmetal atoms that have similar electronegativities. (electron will be pulled closer to the atom with a high electronegativity which cause a polar covalent) COVALENT BONDS ARE STRONGER THAN IONIC BONDS

7
New cards

What is a polar covalent bond?

electrons are shared unequally

8
New cards

What is a nonpolar covalent bond?

electrons are shared equally

9
New cards

Describe single, double, and triple covalent bonds.

10
New cards

What are intermolecular forces?

forces of attraction or repulsive between molecules

11
New cards

What is hydrogen bonding?

A type of intermolecular force, the force of attraction between a hydrogen and another higher electronegative atom.
