Mitosis
Cell division that produces two identical daughter cells, preserving the chromosome number.
Meiosis
Specialized form of cell division that produces gametes with half the chromosome number, resulting in genetic variation.
Diploid (2n)
A cell or organism that has two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent.
Haploid (n)
A cell or organism that has only one set of chromosomes.
Cell cycle
The series of events that take place in a cell leading to its division and replication.
Interphase
The phase of the cell cycle where the cell grows, duplicates its DNA, and prepares for division.
Chromatid
One of two identical halves of a replicated chromosome.
Centromere
The region of a chromosome where the two sister chromatids are joined.
Kinetochore
A complex of proteins associated with the centromere of a chromosome during cell division.
Cytokinesis
The process during cell division in which the cytoplasm of a parental cell is divided into two daughter cells.
