Nation

A group of people with a common culture and a history of self-rule

Nation-State

A country that has a population with a common identity (homogeneous)

An area where a group has some political control but still has to follow the laws of the state

State

An independent, organized area with boundaries and a government; Americans call them countries

Relic Boundaries

former state boundaries that still have political or cultural meaning

Superimposed Boundary

a boundary that is imposed on the cultural landscape by an outside power

Antecedent Boundary

A boundary line established before the area is well populated

Geometric Boundary

Political boundaries that are defined and marked by straight lines

Cultural/Consequent Boundary

A type of boundary that is drawn to accommodate existing linguistic, cultural, or religious boundaries

Physical Boundary

Political Boundaries that correspond with physical features such as mountains or rivers.
