Endotracheal tube
Purpose: need for mechanical ventilation or O2 delivery
Placement: distal tip of tube should be 1-2in above the tracheal bifurcation
Chest tube
(Thoracostomy/intrapleural tube)
Purpose: used to drain intrapleural space (air/fluid)
Placement: dependent on substance being removed
Nasogastric/nasointestinal tube
Purpose: medication, gastric compression, removal of flats and fluids from the stomach
Placement: stomach
Greenfield filter
(IVL filter)
Purpose: traps large dot fragments and prevents them from traveling
Placement: placed through vein in groin or neck into the inferior vena cava
Central venous lines
Purpose: drugs, manage fluid volume, blood analysis, monitor cardiac pressure
Placement: central vein
Peripheral venous line
(PICC line)
Purpose: IV antibiotics, TPN nutrition, chemotherapy
Placement: cephalic vein, basilic vein, brachial vein
Pacemaker
Purpose: provides low levels of electrical stimulation to heart
Placement: left pectoral fascia
