Ionic Bonds
Forces formed by the strong attraction between positive and negative ions.
Covalent Bonds
Bonds formed when nonmetals share valence electrons.
Octet Rule
Atoms tend to gain, lose, or share electrons to achieve eight valence electrons.
Electronegativity
A measure of an atom's ability to attract shared electrons in a bond.
Polar Molecule
A molecule with a distribution of charge leading to a partial positive and negative end.
Nonpolar Molecule
A molecule where electrons are shared equally, resulting in no charge separation.
Lewis Structure
A representation of a molecule that shows the arrangement of valence electrons.
Polyatomic Ion
A charged species composed of two or more atoms covalently bonded.
Dipole
A molecule that has two poles, or regions with opposite charges.
Hydrogen Bond
A strong dipole attraction between a hydrogen atom bonded to a highly electronegative atom and another electronegative atom.
