Innateness Hypothesis
Suggests that language processing is conducted by a dedicated language module in the brain.
Specific Language Impairment (SLI)
A condition diagnosed in childhood where children fall significantly behind peers in language tasks but perform normally on non-verbal intelligence tests.
Williams Syndrome
A genetic disorder affecting about 1 in 7500 children, characterized by sociability and good oral communication skills, but substantial visuospatial and mathematical deficits.
Communication Chain
A model describing the transmission of communication involving the thought, speaker, acoustic production, listener, and communicated idea.
Phonetic Reduction
A change in how a word is produced when used multiple times in succession, resulting in less clarity or shortened pronunciation.
Serial Model (Fromkin’s Model)
A model of speech production where stages are completed sequentially, such as identifying meaning, selecting a syntactic structure, and specifying phonetic segments.
Parallel Model (Levelt’s Model)
A model of speech production where different stages are processed simultaneously, allowing interaction and feedback between stages.
Slips of the Tongue
Inadvertent production errors that can reveal aspects of speech production processes, often occurring under conditions of fatigue or distraction.
Acoustic Production
The sound produced when spoken words are articulated by a speaker.
Psychological Noise
Interfering elements that can cause breakdowns in the communication process.
