Tone
Conveys the author's attitude toward the subject, speaker, or audience of a poem
Haiku
three lines, 5-7-5 syllable scheme, usually about nature
Sonnet
14 lines, usually in iambic pentameter (5 stressed + 5 unstressed = 10 syllables)
Elegy
Mourning and lamenting certain death or loss
Ode
Addresses, appreciates, praises, or glorifies a certain subject
Limerick
Employs 5 funny lines, 8-8-5-5-8 syllables, AABBA rhyme scheme
Epic
A lengthy narrative poem about the extraordinary deeds of extraordinary characters (e.g. Odyssey & Iliad)
Ballad
A poem that tells a story, often in music form, and typically in quatrain stanzas with ABCB rhyme scheme
Rhyme Scheme
Pattern of end-line rhymes in a poem that is labelled with letters (e.g. ABAB, AABB, ABCB)
Meter
The length of a line based on the rhythm used
Feet
Meter is measured in metrical units called ___, which consist of one syllable of rhythm per unit
Iambic; Trochaic; Spondaic; Anapestic; Dactyllic
