What is climate change

is a very real environmental concern that became

very apparent during the 20th century. Climate change refers to the

change in the world’s weather patterns primarily caused by the use

of the greenhouse effect.

2
New cards

What is the green house effect?

is a

process that occurs when the gases in the earth’s atmosphere trap in the sun’s heat

3
New cards

What are fossil fuels? Why do you think they are used if they

contribute to climate change?

like coal, natural gas,

and oil are burned as an energy

source. When burned, oxygen

combines with carbon to form

carbon dioxide (CO2). The overuse

of fossil fuels and the excess of

CO2 in the environment has

contributed to the greenhouse

effect. I think they’re used because they’re much cheaper,

4
New cards

Why does convection occur in liquids and gases, but not solids?

Refer to the particle theory in your answer.

In liquids and gases the atoms they're made of move easier than the ones in solids. When you heat them they spread out and move very fast. But in solids the tiny particles become stuck which causes it to have no room to move around.

What is the difference between a renewable and non-renewable energy source

Unlike renewable resources, a non-renewable

resource is something that can only be used once.

Examples of non-renewable resources include oil,

gas, and diesel.

6
New cards

How does the electricity get transformed into heat?

an electric current passing through the resistor

7
New cards

What are the disadvantages of non-renewable energy?

they

can take up to millions of years to form (hence the

name “fossil”fuel). For this reason, it is important to

conserve some of the fossil fuels in the earth for

guture generations so that the earth’s supply

doesn’t run out.

Another problem with fossil fuels is that they

pollute the earth and contribute to global

warming. Fossil fuels release emissions into the

atmosphere that are harmingful to human health and

ecosystems. Renewable energy sources like solar,

hydro, and wind energy are much cleaner for the

environment however they are often costly to use.

8
New cards

What is heat? What causes heat energy?

Energy that is transfered to two different bodies

which makes different tempature.

9
New cards

What is thermal equilibrium?

it occurs when two objects are

in contact with each other and there is no

exchange in heat energy.

10
New cards

What is the particle theory of matter?

is an explanation of why matter,

which is made up of particles, behaves the way it does.

11
New cards

How does the particle theory of matter apply to heat?

Atoms move more quickly when exposed to heat

(see Point 4 in particle theory).

12
New cards

Atoms move more quickly when exposed to heat

(see Point 4 in particle theory).

Heat also causes solids liquids and gases to

expand in hot weather. Warmer weather can cause bridges,

railways, and sidewalks to expand. It also causes water to

expand. This can lead to increased water levels and this is part of

the reason why global warming is a very big concern for the

planet. Heat can have a similar effect on gases. Warm weather

and hot roads can cause the air in automobile tires to expand.

13
New cards

What is thermal energy

is also referred to as heat energy. As atoms and

molecules (collections of atoms) move inside an object, they create heat

energy. The faster these atoms and molecules move, the hotter the

object. When we measure the temperature of something, we are

actually measuring how fast the atoms or molecules are moving

14
New cards

What is conduction

is the movement of heat by direct contact. Conduction

only occurs in one direction: the object that is warmer transfers

heat to the object that is cooler.

15
New cards

What is convection

is the circular motion that occurs when a warmer liquid or

gas rises, causing the cooler liquid or gas to move below it. As

molecules are heated, they become less dense. This causes the heated

molecules to rise, creating a circular motion.

16
New cards

What is radiation

is the movement of heat energy through

electromagnetic (invisible) waves given off by a heat source. All

solids, liquids, and gases with heat radiate these invisible waves.

17
New cards

What is the difference between temperature and climate change?

“Global warming” refers to the rise in global temperatures due mainly to the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. “Climate change” refers to the increasing changes in the measures of climate over a long period of time – including precipitation, temperature, and wind patterns.
