Rate of Reaction
A measure of how quickly reactants are converted into products in a chemical reaction.
Collision Theory
The theory that chemical reactions occur when reactant particles collide with sufficient energy and proper orientation.
Activation Energy
The minimum energy required for a chemical reaction to occur.
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed in the process.
Mass Loss Method
A technique to measure the rate of reaction by recording the decrease in mass of a reactant.
Gas Collection Method
A method used to measure the volume of gas produced in a reaction over time.
Precipitation Method
A method to measure the rate of reaction by observing the time it takes for a precipitate to form.
Rate Equation
An equation that relates the rate of a reaction to the concentrations of the reactants.
Gradient of a Graph
The slope of a line on a graph, representing the rate of change of a variable.
Factors Affecting Reaction Rate
Factors such as concentration, temperature, surface area, and catalysts that influence how fast a reaction occurs.
Mean Rate of Reaction
The average rate of reaction calculated over a specific time interval.
Molar Gas Volume
The volume occupied by one mole of a gas at standard temperature and pressure (STP), approximately 24,000 cm³/mol.
Successful Collision
A collision between reactant particles that results in a chemical reaction.
Unsuccessful Collision
A collision that does not result in a chemical reaction due to insufficient energy.
Formula Triangle
A tool to help rearrange equations in chemistry for calculating rates of reaction.
Turbidity Measurement
A method used to assess the concentration of a solution by measuring how cloudy it becomes.
Downward Displacement of Water
A technique for collecting gases in which the gas displaces water in an inverted measuring cylinder.
Concentration
The amount of a substance in a given volume; affects the rate of reaction.
Gas Syringe
An apparatus used to accurately measure the volume of gas produced in a reaction.
Kinetic Energy
The energy possessed by a particle due to its motion; influences the reaction rate.
