“heaves”, “pushes”, “slams”, “sieves”, “something ape like about him”, “steadily turns around”
“big, capable hands” & “burn them”
TDOM START ANALYSIS -
Literary motif of dark and light → Light represents threat of exposure
Brutal interrogation by Ferdinand to emphasise threat
Intrusion of her personal space, willing to take any of her power she holds as prince of state
Dynamic imagery of force emphasises threat further
Verbs of force eg. “root” and “blast” creates imagery of how F was to utterly annihilate her completely until nothing is left
Does not want ti fulfil brothers’ desires
Unmoved by threats
ASND START ANALYSIS -
Expressionist theatre & colour imagery
Contrasts with literary trope of “moth” being described for Blanche conveying fact she has a far more subdued, paler appearance, highlighting ultimate doom Blanche is heading towards
Patriarchy evident through dominance of primary colours and highlighting thriving nature of men in New America compared to decaying nature of Old South that BlANCHE REPRESENTS
Brutal and bestial description of men like Stanley through PLEATHORA OF VERBS IN STAGE DIRECTIONS
Dynamic verbs & animal qualities to exemplify the destructive threat he poses for Blancher
Physically intimidating to Blanche
TDOM START - AO5
Ferdinand anger relates to stigmatised idea of remarriage → Callaghan states remarriage seen as as “disease and monstrous abnormality”
AO4: Male threat in start of play

“been missing all summer”
“every man is a king”
“steadily shuffling the cards”
TDOM MIDDLE ANALYSIS -
Tries to defend her right to re-marry even when discovered but falls upon deaf ears, reminding brothers that she’s a “prince” & hence has power in own right, Challenging double standards of time, simply asks why she can’t have same treatment as men as he brothers like other Powerful men don’t need to be “cased up”
Responded with anger & misogynist discourse
Personifies “reputation” as men emphasising that it is men who make judgements about women
Foreboding to audience that Duchess will soon have her title and status taken away from her
Horrified when he brings about death of Duchess since he is a slave to own emotions and changeable nature hence loses power
ASND MIDDLE ANALYSIS -
Expressionist theatre
Strength & reason contrats with Blanche’s fading attempts at taking power, Polka only used mostly with Blanche
Allows reader to become psycholically intimate with her hence creating empathy as her past is revealed & characters like Mitch starts to see her not clean enough adding onto empathy
Sexual double standard is evident like in TDOM, Blanche’s only power is to scream for help
Only Stanley gains power over women he tortures compared to in TDOM
Stanley emerges victorious by winning poker game at end reminding us of “cards” he held from the start
TDOM END -
“I am Duchess of Malfi still”
“Integrity of like is fame’s best friend, which nobly beyond death shall crown the end”
“like diamonds we are cut by are own dust”
ASND END -
“form [Stanley’s] name with her lips]
“soiled and crumpled white satin evening gown”
“blue blanket”
“her voice dies out”
“only depended on the kindness of strangers”
TDOM END -
Use progressive mindset & logic to attack all dominant norms prevalent at time psychologically to remain in power
Those who live humility & right principles shall be remembered providing evidence that play shows power of goodness and morality, not powerlessness of women through triumph of Duchess’ legacy and influence which will live on in her son
Powerful image of men crumbling away to nothing as Duchess will still has power to influence events & when her brothers die they know it because of the consequences of what they did to her
ASND END -
