Name the basic types of Layouts:
Product and Service layout
Process Layout
Fixed Position Layout
Hybrid/Combination Layout
What are the five Characteristics of Product Layout?
Used for handling big amounts of stuff or customers quickly and smoothly
Work is split into simple, repeatable tasks.
Because there’s so much work, it’s worth investing in good equipment and designing jobs well.
The layout should use technology in the best way possible to meet what the product or service
This layout makes the best use of workers and machines, balancing out the high cost of machines.
What are the five advantages of Product Layout?
High rate of output
Low unit cost
Labor specialization
Low material handling cost
High utilization of labor and equipment
Write five disadvantages of Product Layout
Creates dull, repetitive jobs.
Poorly skilled workers may not maintain equipment or quality of output of service
Fairly inflexible to changes in volume
Highly susceptible to shutdowns.
Needs preventive maintenance
Product layout is ________
sequential
Process layout is _______
Functional
write three advantages of Process Layout
Can handle many different types of work or products.
Not easily stopped if a machine breaks down
Machines and equipment cost less.
Three disadvantages of Process layout
Moving materials around is slow and wastes effort.
Planning the order of work and timing is tricky.
Supervising workers is more complicated.
What is a Process Layout?
A flexible setup where similar machines or activities are grouped together. This layout handles different types of products or services, each needing different processes.
Define Product/service layout?
A setup where everything is arranged in a sequence so the product or service moves smoothly from one step to the next without interruption. The process is standardized and repetitive.
What is Fixed Layout?
The product stays in one place, and people, equipment, and materials come to it. This happens when the product is too big or heavy to move.
